About Doodle Empires
Doodle Empires is an in-development sandbox by TanTan that turns alternate history into a sketchbook. You drop a nation onto the map, draw its borders by hand, and see a new timeline emerge from every choice.
Cards drive the chaos. EXPAND, SPLIT, UNION, NEW NATION, NEW LEADER, and BUILD CASTLE let you redraw the balance of power, whether you are growing a continent-wide empire or splintering it into rival states.
The current official page highlights free drawing tools, custom maps and scenarios, and recent content like the North America Update. The paid release includes a Steam key, while the demo gives you a smaller taste of the sandbox.

How to Play Doodle Empires
Basic Controls
- Choose a starting nation, color, and name, then draw borders directly onto the map.
- Choose a nation, draw a new card, use that card to change the selected nation, and repeat the loop.
- Toggle Political, Origin, and Fort modes to understand who owns land, where nations began, and which areas are fortified.
- Use Free Draw and scenario tools to customize the world instead of following a single fixed history.
Pro Tips
- Expand into empty land early so your strongest nations can grow before major rivalries begin.
- Use SPLIT and UNION to create cleaner borders or dramatic reversals when a run starts feeling predictable.
- Build castles on exposed fronts so Fort mode becomes a quick read on which regions can absorb pressure.
- Treat each map like a story prompt and save your boldest custom setups for future scenario experiments.
Game Mechanics
Doodle Empires mixes drawing tools with light strategy systems. You sketch borders, trigger cards, swap map modes, and guide the rise and fall of states across custom scenarios.
Core Sandbox Cards
- EXPAND: Push a nation into nearby land and grow its footprint on the map.
- SPLIT: Break one state into separate countries when borders or stories demand a shake-up.
- UNION: Merge neighboring powers into one larger nation.
- NEW NATION: Add a completely fresh country to the world.
- NEW LEADER: Replace a ruler and send a nation in a new direction.
- BUILD CASTLE: Fortify key territory and make defensive geography part of the story.
Leader System
Leaders help turn each run into a different alternate-history tale. When you use NEW LEADER, a nation can suddenly feel more stable, more reckless, or simply headed toward a different chapter than before.
Randomized Personalities
Each leader change can shift the tone of a campaign and make the same map play out differently.
NEW LEADER Card
Swap rulers mid-run when you want a nation to break from its current trajectory.
Story-First Decisions
Leaders are useful not just for efficiency, but for creating rivalries, recoveries, and dramatic turning points.
Scenario Variety
Different leaders make custom maps and alternate starts feel less repetitive over multiple sandbox sessions.
Sandbox Goals and Story Hooks
Doodle Empires is better treated as a worldbuilding sandbox than a checklist of official achievements. Set your own goals, chase strange alternate histories, and use each run to tell a different story.
Player-Made Goals
- Turn a tiny state into the dominant power on the map using smart EXPAND and UNION plays.
- Split a continent into a web of successor nations and see which one survives the longest.
- Rebuild a favorite scenario with different leaders and compare how the timeline changes.
Story Prompts
- Fortify a frontier with BUILD CASTLE and create a cold-war border that never quite breaks.
- Use NEW NATION to introduce a wildcard country and follow the fallout across the whole map.
- Start on the North America map and invent a timeline that diverges in the first few turns.
Doodle Empires Gameplay
Gameplay is about sketching borders, firing off cards at the right moment, and watching a custom timeline unfold across Political, Origin, and Fort views.
